Due to various previous uses on the site of a current children's playground, there was a general suspicion of possible pollutant contamination in the soil. Since children regularly spent time playing on the meadow areas and oral ingestion of soil could not be ruled out, the responsible municipality considered a corresponding investigation to be sensible. With object-specific planned and executed investigations, well-founded knowledge about the pollutant concentrations in the soil could be obtained and the all-clear could be given.
Procurement and evaluation of basic data on the previous use of the site, such as historical maps and aerial photographs
Development of an investigation concept for the soil investigation and coordination with the responsible authorities
Planning and implementation of the sampling campaign with hand and excavator soundings, organoleptic material assessment, analysis orders to the laboratory Coordination of the soil removal process with the contractor, waste disposal company and cantonal archaeologyPlanning and implementation of the sampling campaign with hand and excavator soundings, organoleptic material assessment, analysis orders to the laboratory
Evaluation of the analysis results, assessment of the pollutant concentrations based on applicable guideline values
and test values according to VBBo, risk assessment for use as a children's playground
Challenges
Only very sparse data available on land use in earlier years
Due to the sensitive use as a children's playground, there are high demands on the sampling and the data quality to be obtained
According to the historical investigations, there was a suspicion of contamination with many different pollutants, which required a detailed analysis program
Lateral and vertical variability of different pollutant concentrations, but within a safe range
Our solutions
Careful preliminary clarifications, planning and preparations as well as good coordination with the responsible municipal and cantonal specialist departments and authorities
Comprehensive and detailed clarifications are mandatory for sensitive uses and enable a competent assessment of the situation
Sound specialist knowledge and knowledge of the applicable legal bases as well as many years of experience are prerequisites for a use-specific risk assessment
With level-appropriate and precautionary investigations, suspected suspicions and uncertainties can be checked and, if necessary, dispelled or further measures planned
