Pesticide surveys on former experimental fields of an agrochemical company

The project

Location: Dielsdorf (ZH)
Customer: Private land owner
Phases: -
Duration: 2020
Building costs: -

Extensive arable farmland was leased by an agrochemical company for many years and used as an experimental field for chlorinated and other pesticides. No accurate information could be obtained about its long-term history of use and the insecticides sprayed. A differentiated survey campaign was carried out and soil samples were removed from various parts and varying depths of up to 60 cm; these were subjected to a phased analysis of conventional pollutants such as heavy metals and polycyclical aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), as well as chlorinated and other pesticides.

Our services

  • Research on pesticides and evaluation of historical aerial photographs to assess and evaluate the general suspicion of contamination
  • Development of a survey programme and sampling concept in line with the current issue and objective
  • Planning and implementation of a sampling campaign, field surveys and compilation of soil profiles, placement of analysis orders with an external laboratory
  • Evaluation of findings and results, documentation in sampling protocols
  • Evaluation of soil contamination and pesticide concentrations, exchange of information with laboratory specialists and the authorities
  • Compilation of a detailed survey report with appendices and annexes

Challenges

  • Lack of any information about the pesticides spray, thus the range of contaminants could not be narrowed down
  • As work was to tight deadlines, sampling took place on frozen ground in January
  • There are no limit values in the Waste Directive (VVEA)
