Extension of Winterthur Remand Centre - Minergie-ECO® standard
Location: Winterthur (ZH)
Client: The Building Department of the canton of Zurich
Phases: Planning and implementation
Duration: 2017 - 2022
The cantonal remand centre in Winterthur is outdated and does not have sufficient cells. It will therefore be replaced with a new building in the coming years. As part of the project to extend the remand centre, additional office space is to be created on the grounds to accommodate the public prosecution department and the cantonal police.
The winning project in the architectural contest was designed by a consortium comprising Gunz & Künze architects and Miebach Oberholzer architects from Zurich. The Winterthur Remand Centre will be extended in accordance with rigorous ecological, economic and energy standards. Plans are therefore in place to obtain Minergie-P-ECO® certification for the building.
Measures to meet the requirements of Minergie-P-ECO® were incorporated into the preliminary project
Hands-on guidance and advice for the large team of specialist planners
Establishing contact with the Minergie-ECO® certification body at an early stage
Building structures with enhanced usage requirements (prison)
The project consists of a new building and the remediation of an existing building
Compliance with deadlines is crucial due to the complex building process
The structural properties of prisons (e.g. the huge inner-wall structure) are partially at odds with Minergie-ECO® requirements
